Purdue Routs Northwestern Ohio in Exhibition, 92-43

 
Purdue’s frontline of Vince Edwards, Isaac Haas and Caleb Swanigan accounted for 48 points and 21 rebounds and the No. 23-ranked Boilermakers suffocated Northwestern Ohio in the second half en route to a 92-43 victory in the exhibition opener at Mackey Arena.

For the fourth-consecutive season and eighth time in program history, the Purdue women's tennis team has punched a ticket to the NCAA Championships. The No. 38 Boilermakers (14-8) received one of 32 at-large bids into the 64-team field. They will take on No. 23 Duke (16-9), also an at-large selection, in the first round at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
 
 
Haas Named Finalist For Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year
 
Purdue freshman center Isaac Haas is one of 21 players nationally named a finalist for the Kyle Macy Freshman of the Year award, announced today by CollegeInsider.com.

Haas is one of four Big Ten players up for the award and is joined on the list by Ohio State’s D’Angelo Russell, Maryland’s Melo Trimble and Indiana’s James Blackmon, Jr.
 
 
Boilermakers Surge to Fifth Place at Puerto Rico Classic
 
The Purdue men's golf team pieced together its best round of the year and catapulted into fifth place after 36 holes at the highly-competitive Puerto Rico Classic.

The Boilermakers fired the third-best round of the day with a 4-under par 284 to surge from 10th to a fifth-place tie at 6-over par 582 (298-284).

Women's Basketball Suffers 73-65 OT Loss to Northwestern

 
The Purdue women's basketball team suffered a 73-65 overtime loss at the hands of visiting Northwestern on Wednesday night in Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers went to extra time for a school-record fifth time this season, falling to 10-14 overall and 3-10 in Big Ten Conference play.
 
 
Purdue Grapplers Beat Binghamton, Fall to No. 5 Missouri and No. 21 Old Dominion

The Purdue wrestling team went 1-2 while wrestling at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals in the Field House at McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College Saturday. The Boilermakers opened the three-dual day by defeating Binghamton (25-7), but fell to No. 5 Missouri (23-9) and No. 21 Old Dominion (16-15) to stand at 4-2 on the young season.
 
 
Purdue Women’s Golf Tops Iowa, 3-2
 
The seventh-seeded Purdue women’s golf team knocked off sixth-seeded Iowa in the opening round of consolation match play, 3-2, at the East & West Match Play Challenge, hosted by Michigan at the Radrick Farms Golf Course.

The Purdue football program welcomed in three early enrollees for the spring semester. Offensive lineman Kirk Baron, quarterback David Blough and defensive lineman Langston Newton are all enrolled in school and will be eligible to participate in the upcoming spring practices.

PURDUE SWIMMING-DIVING DROPS BOTH SIDES OF RIVALRY DUAL AT INDIANA 

   

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Guillermo Blanco and Rhiannon Sheets were each two-time individual event winners and both Purdue swimming and diving teams posted a relay win, but the Boilermakers dropped both sides of their annual rivalry dual meet with Indiana Saturday afternoon.

On a day in which the Big Ten Network televised a swimming and diving meet live for the first time in its history, the No. 10 Indiana men defeated No. 20 Purdue, 166-134. The No. 8 Indiana women were a 169-130 winner over No. 18 Purdue.

The Boilermakers are 6-6 overall, having won two of their final three games. They finished 4-4 in Big Ten Conference play, good for third place in the Leaders Division.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Highlighted by some impressive relay showings, both Purdue swimming and diving teams posted a bevy of new season-best times and thanks to a pair of individual victories from three Boilers, the 22nd-ranked Purdue women won a head-to-head dual at Iowa, 182-118.

Purdue’s Short, Gaston Named Big Ten Players of the Week
 
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue’s Kawann Short and Bruce Gaston have been recognized by the Big Ten Conference for their efforts in the Boilermakers’ 26-23 overtime victory over Ohio State. Short was named as the Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Gaston the Co-Special Teams Player of the Week. It is the second POW honor of the season and the third of his career for Short and the first ever for Gaston.

 

   

Purdue's Raheem Mostert Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week
 
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue’s Raheem Mostert has been named the Nov. 7 Big Ten Freshman of the Week after turning in a record-setting performance last weekend at No. 19 Wisconsin. The weekly honor is the first in Mostert’s career and the second for a Purdue player this season (Kawann Short, Oct. 23 Co-Defensive POW).

Q.  First off, you're playing a Wisconsin team that's had two heartbreaking losses on the road, still very formidable.  Talk about the problems they present. 
 COACH HOPE:  They're a great football team.  That's a tough place to play at.  They're still the same from a run standpoint where they can come out and get after you with the power run game, they have a great  offensive line that's dominant at times and loaded with good running backs.  That part of them hasn't changed offensively. 

   

   

Purdue’s Joe Holland Named NFF National Scholar-Athlete & Lott Trophy Quarterfinalist
 
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue’s Joe Holland got a double dose of good news on Wednesday as he was announced as one of 16 football players named as recipients of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards and also one of 20 semifinalists for the 2011 Ronnie Lott IMPACT Trophy.

Boilermakers continue playing with confidence.
 
Caleb TerBush passed for 178 yards and two touchdowns to help Purdue upset No. 23 Illinois 21-14 on Saturday afternoon.

Raheem Mostert ran for a touchdown and tackled the punter on a play that led to another score for the Boilermakers (4-3, 2-1 Big Ten). It was Purdue's first victory over a ranked team since beating No. 7 Ohio State in 2009.

Q. How difficult has it been just to deal with that situation where -- with the quarterbacks?
 COACH HOPE:  Well, it's been a challenge just kind of the way it's all happened.  We went through a lot of quarterbacks in a short period of time.  We had five different starting quarterbacks, I think, in 13 or 14 games.

   

   

PURDUE WOMEN’S SOCCER SCORES TWICE IN FOUR MINUTES TO DEFEAT OHIO ST. 2-1 

   

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.  – Kellie Phillips and Kaityln Blacha scored just under four minutes apart, both goals coming off assists from Laura McCalla, to help Purdue women’s soccer overcome an early deficit and defeat Ohio State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex.

The much-needed victory, the Boilers’ first at home in Big Ten Conference play this season, allowed Purdue (5-8-2, 2-3-1 Big Ten) to leapfrog a pair of teams (Indiana and Nebraska) in the standings while enhancing its league tournament hopes.

     

   

Boilermakers Beat Minnesota In Big Ten Opener, 45-17

 

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP)--Akeem Shavers caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score to help Purdue beat Minnesota 45-17 on Saturday.
Caleb TerBush completed 14 of 21 passes for 140 yards and a score and O.J. Ross caught five passes for 63 yards and a TD for the Boilermakers (3-2, 1-0 Big Ten).

 



Purdue Falls to Notre Dame, 38-10

   

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Michael Floyd had 12 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown to help Notre Dame defeat Purdue 38-10 on Saturday night.
Cierre Wood ran for a career-high 191 yards, Jonas Gray rushed for 94 yards and Tommy Rees passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns for the Fighting Irish (3-2).

Q. I guess the first question, having the bye week, what was the focus in terms of what you wanted to get accomplished in the bye week and how did that turn out?
 COACH HOPE:  The bye week, the bye week went very well for us.  We think we got done what said set out to get done.  We wanted to give them some reps first, so after the SE Missouri game, they had sun afternoon off, all of Monday, all of Tuesday, all of Wednesday to give them a chance to fuel up a little bit, freshen up a little bit, get away, get some personal time.

They're a very physical football team and an experienced football team.  They have a lot of players back.  They're similar to us in some ways, as far as last season goes. They thought they could have a good football team in the season last year possibly and had a lot of
injuries.  I think they had three or four starting quarterbacks last year as well.

 COACH HOPE:  They're a good football team.  Obviously they've won the last couple years.  They've had some post-season play.  They're a fast football team.  On the defensive side of the ball they're real big in regards to bringing pressure, a lots of blitzes.  They'll hang their hat on trying to disrupt your offensive front.

PURDUE WOMEN’S SOCCER DROPS WILD ROAD GAME AT MISSOURI, 4-2   

    

COLUMBIA, Mo.– Purdue women’s soccer took an early lead and later pulled within a goal in the second half, but Missouri answered both scores and tacked on two additional goals, defeating the Boilers, 4-2, Sunday afternoon.
Purdue (1-3) received goals from seniors Alexis Tryba and Kaitlyn Blacha, ending a scoring drought of 230 consecutive minutes after getting shutout in back-to-back games since winning its season opener.

  

PURDUE’S BOUDIA NAMED JESSE OWENS MALE BIG TEN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

 PARK RIDGE, Ill. – Purdue’s David Boudia has been voted the Jesse Owens Male Big Ten Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 school year, becoming the first diver to win the award and only the second Purdue male student-athlete to be honored.

Boudia joins former basketball standout Glenn Robinson as the only Boilermakers to win the Jesse Owens Award since its inception in 1982. Robinson was recognized as the top male athlete in the conference in 1993-94, a year in which he was also selected first overall in the NBA Draft

   

  

DIVER BOUDIA & GOLFER GULYANAMITTA SELECTED PURDUE ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.– Junior diver David Boudia and senior golfer Numa Gulyanamitta have been named Purdue's Athletes of the Year for the 2010-11 school year. They were selected by a vote of athletics department administrators from a pool of candidates made up of each sport's Most Valuable Player or similar designee.
 
Boudia and Gulyanamitta will now represent the Boilermakers in the voting for the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Year awards. Boudia is in the running for the Big Ten Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year award, and Gulyanamitta is up for the Big Ten Suzy Favor Athlete of the Year award.
