Purdue Grapplers Beat Binghamton, Fall to No. 5 Missouri and No. 21 Old Dominion
The
Purdue wrestling team went 1-2 while wrestling at the Journeymen/ASICS
Northeast Duals in the Field House at McDonough Sports Complex on the
campus of Hudson Valley Community College Saturday. The Boilermakers
opened the three-dual day by defeating Binghamton (25-7), but fell to
No. 5 Missouri (23-9) and No. 21 Old Dominion (16-15) to stand at 4-2
on the young season.
Purdue took eight consecutive weights
(133-197) en route to a 25-7 showing against Binghamton. Brandon Nelsen
fueled the Boilermakers with bonus points at 149 pounds thanks to a
13-0 major decision over Nick Tighe. Nelsen tallied seven back points
in the match, a pair of takedowns and racked up 4:39 of riding time for
the first major decision of his redshirt senior campaign.
Of the
three weights that the Boilermakers were able to take from Missouri,
two of them were upsets. Unranked Danny Sabatello took down a second
nationally ranked opponent at 133 pounds in less than a week, shocking
No. 12 Matt Manley, 7-4. A takedown and an escape from Sabatello and a
takedown and penalty point for Manley had the match tied at 3-3 after
five minutes of action.
After deferring in the second, Manley
took bottom in the third, to which Sabatello was able to get the Tiger
tilted for a five count and took a 6-3 lead. Manley then escaped to
make it 6-4 with 34 seconds remaining. The redshirt junior hailing from
Long Grove, Ill., denied Manley's frenzied attempts to get a shot in as
the final seconds ticked away.
Chad Welch picked up his second
win of the day with a 5-2 upset of No. 15 Mikey England at 174 pounds.
Welch got the first points on the board with a two-point nearfall early
in the second period. He continued to ride tough throughout the second
period, pushing over the two-minute mark. Welch tacked on a reversal in
the third period to build a 4-0 lead, only to have England return the
reversal, making it 4-2. Welch captured the valuable riding time point,
tallying 2:26, to upend a nationally ranked opponent for a third time
this season.
The third winner for Purdue was Pat Robinson at 165
pounds. The redshirt senior took Cody Johnson down three times and
added a third period escape to post a 7-4 decision. Robinson did not
surrender a takedown in the match, with all four of Johnson's points
coming via escape.
The Boilermakers spilt five tightly contested
decisions with Old Dominion, but it was a major decision at 165 that
proved to be the difference maker for the Monarchs. Sabatello earned
Purdue three team points with his third decision of the day, a 6-4 win
over Michael Hayes, pushing his season record to 12-1.
Redshirt
sophomore Alex Griffin got in on the upset party as well with an
impressive showing against Alexander Richardson, beating the
11th-ranked Old Dominion 149-pounder 8-1. Griffin twice received
penalty points for Robinson's behavior on the mat, tilted him for a
five count in the third period and added 3:24 worth of riding time to
pick up his 12th win of the season. The dozen wins by Griffin (12-5)
and Sabatello are team highs.
Doug Welch's 5-3 decision over TC
Warner in the next match at 157 gave Purdue a 9-6 lead in the dual. D.
Welch scored a takedown and an escape in the opening stanza, a reversal
to start the second period and escaped at the start of the third to
take the match.
After a scoreless first period between C. Welch
and Austin Coburn, the Monarch chose down to which C. Welch showed how
important strong riding is. The redshirt junior maintained control for
the entire 2:00 session for a clear advantage. Then taking bottom in
the final period, C. Welch escaped and iced the match with a takedown
at the 13-second mark. He was awarded the riding time point for his
2:10 for a 4-0 final.
Double winners Saturday included Nick Lawrence (141), D. Welch (157), Robinson and eighth-ranked Braden Atwood(197).
The Boilermakers will be back in action on their home mat in Holloway Gymnasium hosting SIU Edwardsville at 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 6.
