#19 PURDUE BASEBALL TOPS ANDERSON AT VICTORY FIELD
INDIANAPOLIS
– No. 19 Purdue baseball scored in each of the first three innings and
did not surrender an official hit until the fifth, cruising to a 6-1
victory against Anderson University Wednesday evening at Minor League
Baseball stadium Victory Field.
The Boilermakers (21-5) won an
11th straight true midweek game dating back to March of 2011 and
improved to 7-1 in neutral-site games this season.
Six Purdue
pitchers teamed up to record 11 strikeouts while facing 31 batters. Pat
Gannon struck out five of the eight batters he faced over two innings
of scoreless relief.
Offensively, David Miller led the way with
his second four-hit game as a Boiler while batting leadoff for the
first time this season. He singled to begin the first and second
innings, scoring in both frames. The senior had a hit in each of his
four at-bats, punctuated by an RBI double in the fifth.
Barrett
Serrato delivered a two-run single in the first inning, Kevin Plawecki
singled home Miller in the second, and Sean McHugh tripled and scored
on a Bennett Oliver sacrifice fly in the third.
Freshman Brandon
Krieg made his first start of the season and collected his first
collegiate hit on a two-out single in the fifth inning. He scored
moments later on Miller’s double off the warning track in right center.
Anderson’s
only official hit was a leadoff single from Vince Moore in the bottom
of the fifth. In the third inning, Jason Craft ripped a ball to the
wall in left center for a triple. But he was called out for not
touching first base when Purdue appealed.
Craft’s triple was the
only hit starting pitcher Robert Ramer surrendered. After Craft was
called out, Ramer (2-0) successfully went nine-up, nine-down in his
three innings. The right-hander struck out three and has now worked 17
2/3 innings this season without issuing a walk. The Boilermakers
improved to 11-1 in Ramer’s 12 career starts.
Gannon struck out
the side in the fifth inning. Andrew Quinnette, Sean Collins and Brett
Andrzejewski each worked a 1-2-3 inning of relief. Quinnette made his
Purdue debut Wednesday.
Purdue returns to action Friday when it
begins a three-game weekend series at Northwestern. The series opener
is slated for 4 p.m. ET.
