Purdue's Raheem Mostert Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week
WEST
LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue’s Raheem Mostert has been named the Nov. 7 Big
Ten Freshman of the Week after turning in a record-setting performance
last weekend at No. 19 Wisconsin. The weekly honor is the first in
Mostert’s career and the second for a Purdue player this season (Kawann
Short, Oct. 23 Co-Defensive POW). The first-year
Boilermaker smashed the school record for both total kickoff return
yardage and average yardage per kickoff return. The New Smyrna Beach,
Fla., native ripped off 206 yards on five returns to eclipse the
previous 42-year old record of 184 yards on six returns by Stan Brown
set at Ohio State on Nov. 15, 1969. His 41.2 return average also
bettered Brown’s top Purdue mark of 39.5 set on four returns for 158
yards against Iowa on Oct. 18, 1969. He broke Brown’s total return
yardage mark despite one less return and had a higher average than
Brown’s previous mark despite one more return. The true freshman
finished with returns of 74, 49, 40, 22 and 21 yards against the
Badgers. Mostert’s historic day vaulted the freshman into
sixth among all Football Bowl Subdivision returners and second in the
Big Ten conference with a season average of 31.6 yards per return. Purdue
returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Ohio State at noon in
Ross-Ade Stadium. The game will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
