Purdue Women’s Golf Tops Iowa, 3-2
The
seventh-seeded Purdue women’s golf team knocked off sixth-seeded Iowa
in the opening round of consolation match play, 3-2, at the East &
West Match Play Challenge, hosted by Michigan at the Radrick Farms Golf
Course on Sunday. Senior Aurora Kan, sophomore August Kim and
freshman Linn Andersson each won their individual bouts as the
Boilermakers advance to face Miami tomorrow in the
consolation finals. Andersson put the Boilermakers’ first
point on the board, leading the majority of the day over Iowa’s Amy Ihm
at No. 5. The Purdue freshman took a one-shot lead on the second and
fourth holes, but Ihm answered both times to even the score. Andersson
took the lead for good with a birdie on the eighth hole and put the
match to bed with another birdie on the 16th hole to finish
2&1. The Hawkeyes evened the team score at No. 4 as
Elisa Suarez topped Marta Martin, 6&5, but the Boilermakers grabbed
the lead back in the No. 3 spot as Kim held off Shelby Phillips with a
one-up win. Kim built her lead over the first 13 holes, leading by as
many as four holes, but Phillips closed strong and cut the edge to one
with two holes to play. However Kim played her opponent even through
the final two holes and came away with the win for the Boilermakers. Purdue
junior Anna Appert Lund went down to the wire with Iowa’s Jessica Ip,
but fell in the end, one-down, to knot the team score at 2-2 going to
the final pairing. Appert Lund took a one-shot lead three times through
the match, but back-to-back holes from Ip on the 14th and
15th holes gave the Hawkeye a one shot lead. The Boilermaker
junior pulled back to even on the 16th hole, but Ip would regain
the lead on No. 17 and hold on to her lead on the final hole for the
win. Kan led wire-to-wire in a 3&1 victory over Jessie
Singlinger, sealing the team win for the Boilermakers. Kan led by as
many as five match points during the contest, and held at least a
two-point advantage the whole way.
