PURDUE WOMEN WIN HEAD-TO-HEAD, MEN DROP BOTH ENDS OF TRIPLE DUAL AT IOWA

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Highlighted by some impressive relay showings, both Purdue swimming and diving teams posted a bevy of new season-best times and thanks to a pair of individual victories from three Boilers, the 22nd-ranked Purdue women won a head-to-head dual at Iowa, 182-118, Friday evening.

The No. 17 Purdue men came up on the short end of a pair of tight dual-scoring competitions with No. 10 Iowa and No. 11 Ohio State. The Boilermakers lost to Iowa, 155-145, and to Ohio State, 170-130. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes defeated Iowa, 163-118.

The Purdue women improved to 4-0 in dual meet action this season. The Purdue men are now 3-2 in head-to-head competitions. Both teams will close out their fall schedules Dec. 2-4 at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus. The Boilermakers will return to Iowa City in February for the Big Ten Championships.

Lauren Gustafson (50 and 100 free), Emily Fogle (100 and 200 breast) and Maddie Miskulin (1- and 3-meter diving) led the way for the Purdue women with a pair of individual victories each.

But it was the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams that not only posted new Purdue season-best times but also recorded NCAA provisional-qualifying times while winning the events. Amy Katz, Fogle, Kylie Vogel and Gustafson teamed up to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.38.  Carly Mercer, Lauren Roth and Lauren Nichols joined Gustafson on the victorious 400 free relay team that finished with a time of 3:24.03.

The Purdue men also put together an impressive showing among a fast field in the 400 free relay. Matt Friede, Ben Ziolkowski, Ben Wachtel and Danny Tucker teamed up for a season-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 2:57.94. The quartet finished second to an Iowa team that won the event with a pool record of 2:57.31.

Friede’s opening leg 100 split of 44.63 also represents a Purdue season-best time.

Individually, Fogle (100 breast) and Albert Miller (100 breast) won events with Purdue season-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying times. Miller teamed with Lyam Dias to help the Boilers sweep the breaststroke events. Brian Kiel’s victory in the 200 individual medley was the only other win of the night for the men.

Roth captured the 200 fly and registered new Purdue season-best times while finishing second in both the 200 and 500 free. Rhiannon Sheets finished second to Roth in the 200 fly and recorded a new team season-best time while winning the 100 fly. Megan Gallagher (1000 free), Katz (100 back) and Kristen Gilson (200 back) also finished with new season-best marks. Gilson did so while winning the 200 back.

While victories may have been tough to come by for the men, season-best times were not. Wachtel (50 free), Alec LaMothe (500 free), Jan Petric (1000 free), Kiel (100 and 200 back), Dias (200 breast), G. Daniel Michael (100 fly) and Eduard Galdeano (200 fly) all posted strong showings among fast fields.
