PURDUE WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYS SEATTLE TO A 2-2 DRAW

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women’s soccer held the lead twice thanks to goals from Maddy Williams and Alex Hairston, but Seattle University scored on two of its limited number of chances to equalize twice and salvage a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex.

The 110-minute affair was the Boilermakers (3-2-1) first overtime game of the season. It was Purdue’s first draw since playing Illinois even in October of last year. Coincidentally, the Boilers also had 2-2 draws at home on Sept. 9, 2011 and 2012.

Purdue dominated the shot (21-6) and corner kick (13-2) counts. But after there were four goals scored in the first 40 minutes of the game, quality offensive opportunities were much sparser for both teams in the final 70 minutes.

Williams scored her sixth goal of the season in the third minute. Hairston’s second goal of 2013 and team-high 12th career gave the Boilers the lead back in the 30th minute. Seattle equalized in the 23rd and 40th minutes.

Purdue goalkeeper Jordan Ginther made the best save of the game in the 72nd minute. Seattle (2-1-2) had a set piece opportunity along the west sideline within striking distance of the goal. The ball was served into the heart of the 18-yard box where it found the head of Sarah Coluccio. Ginther made the diving save to her right near the left post to keep the game tied.

Williams scored into the top half of the net after dribbling up the right flank, gaining possession after intercepting the ball from the Seattle back line following a deflection. The freshman is the first Boiler with six goals through the first six games since Jessica Okorofao in 2009.

Hairston scored with a shot into the top half of the net from top of the 18-yard box after a connected pass from Hadley Stuart.

Seattle’s Stephanie Verdoia flicked a floater over Ginther’s head for the first equalizer of the game in the 23rd minute. Heather Thomas played a free kick into the Purdue third from midfield. The ball bounced on the edge of the 18-yard box and came to Verdoia on the left side of the box.

Jacqui Wallis and Kat Prati took advantage of a breakdown in the Purdue defense in the 40th minute to tie the game again. Wallis scored into a wide open net from the heart of the 18-yard box after a short right-to-left pass from Prati.

Seattle goalkeeper Brianna Smallidge finished with eight saves, her best two stops coming less than two minutes apart in the first half. After the second of three Purdue corner kick chances in about a minute’s time, Smallidge got her hand on a blast from Melissa Casella from the top of the 18-yard box, deflecting the ball over the crossbar. About 75 seconds later, she was in good position to make a point blank save on Williams on a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box.

Kuramoto and Williams both missed high with well-struck shot attempts in the overtime periods. Kuramoto also forced Smallidge to make a save in the 98th minute.

Mikayla Lasky, Kim Love and Casella went the distance among the Purdue field players. Kuramoto (91) and Williams (91) also logged 90-plus minutes. Christa Szalach was on the field for 40 minutes to lead the reserves.
