Seven Boilermakers Recognized By Big Ten
WEST
LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Seven Purdue football players have earned All-Big Ten
honors for the 2011 season, as voted by the conference coaches and
media and announced tonight on the Big Ten Network. Junior
defensive tackle Kawann Short, Purdue’s 2011 Defensive Team MVP, was
selected first team all-league in a vote by the conference coaches and
second team by the media. He finished the regular season with his most
productive year as a Boilermaker with career-highs in total tackles
(53), tackles for loss (17.0-53 yards) and sacks (6.5-31). He also
blocked a pair of kicks, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and broke
up a pass this season. Short finished the regular season ranked tied
for 13th nationally and tied for third in the Big Ten in tackles for
loss and tied for sixth in the conference in sacks. Sophomore
punter Cody Webster was recognized with second team all-conference
honors by both the coaches and the media. Webster finished the regular
season with 44 punts for 1,904 yards and a 43.3 yards per punt average.
He placed 11 of his punts inside the opposition’s 20-yard line,
finished with 13 punts over 50 yards, including a season-long 66-yarder
against Minnesota on Oct. 8, and remarkably did not have a single
touchback all season. Joining Short and Webster on the
second team in voting conducted by the league’s coaches were sophomore
cornerback Ricardo Allen and senior kicker Carson Wiggs. Allen wrapped
up his second regular season with 72 tackles, including three for
losses, three interceptions, three passes broken up, a fumble forced
and a fumble recovered. In merely his 17th collegiate game, Allen tied
the Purdue career record for interceptions returned for touchdowns,
when he scampered 37 yards against Minnesota on Oct. 8 for his third
pick-six. Wiggs finished the regular season 16 of 21 on
field goal tries, including making his last nine consecutive attempts.
He was honored as the Nov. 28 Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week
after going 4 for 4 on field goal attempts against Indiana, which
matched his career high by hitting from 48, 43, 29 and 22 yards out,
and also connecting on all three PAT attempts to account for 15 of
Purdue's 33 points in the game. Wiggs is the most accurate kicker in
school history (73.6 percent, 53 for 72) and has the second-most field
goals ever at Purdue (53). Allen, junior linebacker Dwayne
