ROTH SETS NEW 500 FREE WOMEN’S RECORD ON OPENING NIGHT OF OSU INVITE      

OLUMBUS, Ohio – Highlighted by a new school-record time from Lauren Roth in the 500 freestyle, both Purdue swimming teams opened the three-day Ohio State Invitational with a host of new season-best times. The Purdue men and women both stand in second place behind the host Buckeyes.

Roth posted the lone individual victory of the night by a Boiler and did so in impressive fashion. She finished the 500 free in 4:42.12, eclipsing Caitlin Hamilton’s school record of 4:43.07 from the 2011 Big Ten Championships. Roth’s time was one of four NCAA provisional qualifying times posted by Boilers.

On the men’s side, Brian Kiel (1:48.35) and Lyam Dias (1:48.83) finished back-to-back in the 200 IM and in the process registered NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Lauren Gustafson’s time of 22.90 in the 50 free was not only an NCAA provisional qualifier but also the third fastest time in program history. Gustafson also swam the anchor leg on both top-finishing relays, teaming with Carly Mercer, Lauren Nichols and Rhiannon Sheets on the 200 free relay (1:30.60) and Amy Katz, Emily Fogle and Sheets on the 400 medley relay (3:39.33). Both quartets finished with NCAA provisional qualifying times that doubled as the second-fastest times in those events in program history. The 200 free foursome won the event.

The men also excelled in the relays and posted NCAA provisional qualifying times. The 200 free relay team of Ben Ziokowski, Matt Friede, Danny Tucker and Ben Wachtel improved on its time from the Nov. 5 dual win against Northwestern, lowering the fourth-fastest time in program history to 1:19.71. They finished second to an OSU foursome that set a new meet record of 1:18.57.

The 400 medley relay quartet of Kiel, Albert Miller, G. Daniel Michael and Friede finished with a time of 3:16.79 that was also an NCAA provisional qualifier.

Individually, Friede and Tucker matched Kiel and Dias by finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 50 free.

The Ohio State Invitational continues Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. Events on the schedule includes: 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 medley relay and 800 free relay.
