Badgers junior Elliot
Krause becomes 11th Academic All-American from men’s track team
MADISON, Wis. -- Elliot Krause’s strong season on the track and
in the classroom has earned the University of Wisconsin junior Capital
One Academic All-America honors.
Krause, a native of Appleton, Wis., was named to the Capital One
Academic All-America third team on Tuesday, as the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced honorees in
men’s track and field/cross country.
By being named to the Capital One Academic All-District 5 team in May,
Krause was eligible for a place on the Academic All-America squads,
which are selected by CoSIDA’s Academic All-America committee.
To be eligible, athletes must have reached sophomore status at an
institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or
higher.
Krause gives UW an Academic All-American for the third-consecutive
season. Jack Bolas earned second-team honors in 2009 before being named
to the Capital One Academic All-America first team as a senior last
year.
In all, the Badgers have seen seven athletes earn a total of 13
Academic All-America accolades since 2000 -- including five first-team
honors.
A mathematics major, Krause enjoyed a fantastic year spanning the cross
country, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. In cross country,
he scored first-team All-Region honors with his seventh-place finish at
the 2010 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, helping the Badgers to a
fifth-straight regional team title.
That came on the heels of his fifth-place finish at the 2010 Big Ten
Championship, a showing that aided the Badgers in capturing their
13th-consecutive Big Ten crown on their home course. The performance
earned Krause first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second-consecutive
season.
In track, he scored a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters at the
Big Ten outdoor championships after posting the league’s
season-best time of 28:43.34 in the event. He also finished 14th
in the 10,000 meters at the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary Round, narrowly
missing a berth in the NCAA outdoor championships.
Already a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in cross country,
Krause also scored Academic All-Big Ten honors in track this spring --
his first season of eligibility for academic honors.
He also was an All-Academic pick by the U.S. Track & Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association in 2010, an honor for which he will
again be eligible this season.
