Killer Z's: Zulinick, Zengerle-Pair combines for three goals, help Badgers to 4-2 win
On
Friday, Ohio State jumped out to an early lead against the Wisconsin
men's hockey team before holding on for a 2-1 win. On Saturday, the
first period was all UW, as the Badgers took a 2-0 lead into the first
intermission and held on for a 4-2 win.
Morgan Zulinick
(Kamloops, British Columbia) and Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.)
starred for the Badgers (17-9-2, 8-5-1 B1G), as they each lit the lamp
in the first period to stake UW with a lead it would never relinquish. Ohio State would never fully recover from the 2-0 deficit, though it twice cut the UW lead to a single goal.
But each time, Wisconsin had an answer.
A
Nick Schilkey goal cut the Badger lead to 2-1 in the second period, but
Zengerle struck again off a juicy rebound just 1:02 into the third.
This time the tally came off a Frankie Simonelli (Bensenville, Ill.)
shot, which kicked out to Zengerle in the slot.
Ohio State
wouldn't go down without a fight, responding with a goal of its own
less than a minute later, courtesy of Max McCormick on a well-executed
3-on-2 rush.
The score set the stage for a pressure-packed
finish. Though the Buckeyes got several golden scoring opportunities,
Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) and the Badger defense kept
them off the board until Nic Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) iced the game
with an empty-netter at 19:58.
Rumpel finished the game with 28
saves on 30 shots, while Frey allowed three goals on 27 attempts. The
Wisconsin penalty kill was as strong as usual, keeping OSU off the
board on four power plays. Wisconsin cashed in once in three tries on
the man-advantage.
The win snapped Ohio State's six-game unbeaten streak and Wisconsin's five-game road winless streak.
