Battling Badgers earn another draw in second-straight double overtime game

Showing endurance and grit, the Wisconsin women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw in its second-straight double overtime game of the weekend on the road against Kentucky on Sunday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem made four saves and helped lead the Badgers (3-3-2) in recording their first shutout of the season. It marked the first clean sheet of Clem’s career.

Leading the charge offensively for UW was junior midfielder Rose Lavelle, who tallied a game-high five shots and produced one of the two scoring opportunities in the game for the Badgers. Senior midfielder Kinley McNicoll created the only other shot on goal for UW, recording three shots of her own.

While the Wildcats (6-1-1, 1-0-0 SEC) finished with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal, Wisconsin controlled a majority of the possession and won both the battles for shots, 12-9, and corner kicks, 5-3.

Katelyn Jensen opposed Clem in the net for UK, finishing with two saves and a shutout of her own.

Wisconsin continues a four-game road stretch next weekend when it begins Big Ten Conference play at No. 7 Penn State on Thursday and at No. 15 Ohio State on Sunday.

HEAD COACH PAULA WILKINS:

“With all the travel this weekend and playing a good team in Kentucky today, I liked the response that I saw. Caitlyn Clem was good today and it was good to see the defense get a shutout. You always want to get a result and I felt like we created enough chances. But, I told the team that today showed that we’ve taken another step. We got the shutout, now we need to figure things out on the other side and score. Today they brought the competitive nature that they needed. If we can work to put it all together, we’ll be in a good place going forward.”

NOTES:

- Wisconsin is now undefeated in its last 10 overtime games with a 6-0-4 record dating back to last season. This year alone, UW is 2-0-2 in overtime games. Sunday was the second straight double overtime game of the weekend for UW, which also played to a 2OT draw at UW-Milwaukee on Friday night.

- Caitlyn Clem recorded her first career shutout with four saves. Playing the entirety of the double overtime contest, Clem also played a career high 110 minutes.

- Rose Lavelle led UW in shots for the sixth-straight game. The 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy candidate has led UW in shots in all but one of UW’s games so far this season.
