Penn
State Defeats Ohio State 3-0 at Outrigger Invitational
COLUMBUS,
Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State men's volleyball team fell to No. 7 Penn
State, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-22), Saturday night to conclude the
Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational on the campus of the
University of Hawai'i. The Buckeyes dropped to 2-2 on the season, while
the Nittany Lions improved to 2-1.
Senior Chen
Levitan led Ohio State with 11 kills, while sophomore Brennan Anderson
totaled a career-best 16 digs. Senior Grayson Overman had a match-high
six blocks (2s,4a).
The Nittany Lions had three
student-athletes with double-digit kills in the match. Aaron
Russell had a match-best 13 kills, while Peter Russell finished with
12. Tom Comfort totaled 10 kills and four blocks for Penn State.
A
kill by Levitan and an Overman solo block gave the Buckeyes a 4-2 lead
to open the first. The Nittany Lions used a 4-0 run to take a 9-7
advantage before another Levitan kill and a John Tholen block tied it
up at nine. A pair of two-point runs lifted PSU to a 16-13 lead, but
the Buckeyes chipped away at to come within a point at 23-22. Kills
from Overman and Levitan locked the set at 24. However, the Nittany
Lions used two kills from Peter Russell to win the set, 26-24.
The
two teams battled back and forth in the second set before a 3-0 run
pushed PSU up 15-12. The Nittany Lions then followed with a seven-point
run for a 23-15 lead. A Levitan kill and a Peter Heinen ace helped cut
the Penn State advantage, but it was too much as PSU went on to win
25-17.
Down early in the third, Ohio State
capitalized on Nittany Lion errors to take a 6-4 lead. Kills from
Michael Henchy and Matt Pohlman led to a 12-9 Buckeye lead, but PSU
responded late with a 3-0 run to cut the score 17-16. A trio of
two-point Nittany Lion runs gave the team a 22-20 lead and PSU finished
the match with a 25-22 win.
