OSU Hosts No. 9 Penn State Wednesday and Travels to No. 22 Michigan Friday
Buckeyes close out the regular season
COLUMBUS,
Ohio - The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (18-13 overall, 8-10 Big
Ten) hosts No. 9 Penn State (21-7, 14-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday and
travels to No. 22 Michigan (19-11, 7-11) at 7 p.m. Friday to close out
the regular season. Wednesday’s match with the Penn State Nittany Lions
is the final regular season home match in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes
close out the regular season at the Michigan Wolverines. That match
will be played in Crisler Arena.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Coached
by Geoff Carlston, the Buckeyes are 18-13 overall and 8-10 in the Big
Ten Conference. Last week, Ohio State lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 28-26) to
No. 8 Purdue and defeated Indiana, 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-19) in home
contests.
Leading the Buckeyes in points per set is Mari Hole at
4.51. Emily Danks ranks second at 4.18 with Kelli Barhorst third at
2.77. Hole has a team-high 3.99 kills per set average with Danks second
at 3.32 and Kaitlyn Leary third at 2.51. Barhorst is hitting .310 to
lead the squad. Danks ranks second in attack percentage at .268 with
Mariah Booth third at .257. At setter, Taylor Sherwin is averaging 9.69
assists per set with Amanda Peterson at 8.85. Leading the squad in aces
per set is Danks at .46 with 52. Sarah Mignin ranks second at .21 with
24 aces and Hole is third at .18 with 21. Defensively, Mignin has a
team-high 4.28 digs per set average. Hole ranks second at 2.68 with
Davionna DiSalvatore third at 1.99. At the net, Booth leads the team
with a 1.04 blocks per set average with nine solos and 86 assists.
Barhorst ranks second at .99 with 17 solos and 95 assists with Danks
third at .77 with eight solos and 76 assists. In serve reception
percentage, Mignin has a .962 serve reception percentage handling 733
of 762 attempts. Hole is second at .958 handling 566 of 591 attempts.
Alyssa Winner is third at .960 handling 309 of 322 attempts.
Ohio
State is averaging 17.82 points, 14.34 kills and 13.42 assists per set
while hitting .238. OSU is averaging 1.10 aces, 15.34 digs and 2.38
blocks per set and has a .954 serve reception percentage. Buckeye
opponents average 15.50 points, 12.52 kills and 11.69 assists per set
while hitting .198. They average .92 aces, 14.24 digs and 2.06 blocks
per set and have a .947 serve reception percentage.
A LOOK AT PENN STATE
Coached
by Russ Rose, the ninth-ranked Nittany Lions are 21-7 overall and 14-4
in the Big Ten Conference. Last week, in home matches, Penn State won,
3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-12) over Indiana and defeated eighth-ranked
Purdue, 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-18). Currently, the Nittany Lions
have a three-match winning streak.
Leading the squad in points
per set at 4.06 is Deja McClendon. Ariel Scott ranks second at 3.94 and
Katie Slay is third at 2.97. McClendon has a team-high 3.65 kills per
set average. Scott ranks second at 3.49 with Slay third at 2.10. Slay
leads the squad in attack percentage at .382. Nia Grant ranks second at
.338 with McClendon third at .270. Setter Micha Hancock is averaging
10.31 assists per set. Hancock has a team-high .82 aces per set average
with 85. Ali Longo ranks second at .27 with 27 with Kristin Carpenter
third at .15 with 13. Defensively, Longo leads the team with a 3.23
digs per set average. Hancock, at 2.30, ranks second with McClendon
third at 1.94. At the net, Slay is averaging 1.48 blocks per set to

Penn State is averaging 18.05 points,
13.59 kills and 12.58 assists per set while hitting .263. The Nittany
Lions average 1.72 aces, 14.10 digs and 2.74 blocks per set. Opponents

PENN STATE-OHIO STATE SERIES
Penn
State leads the series with Ohio State, 36-14. The Buckeyes are 8-16 in
Columbus, 5-18 in University Park, and 1-2 in neutral site matches.
Penn State has won the last nine matches against Ohio State with OSU’s
last win coming in 2006, a 3-0 (30-19, 30-26, 30-21) win at home over
the third-ranked Nittany Lions. Earlier this season in University Park,
Penn State defeated Ohio State, 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-15).
A LOOK AT MICHIGAN
Coached
by Mark Rosen, the 22nd-ranked Wolverines are 19-11 overall and 7-11 in
the Big Ten. Last week, in home matches, Michigan defeated
Northwestern, 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11) and lost 3-1
(22-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-21) to seventh-ranked Illinois.
Leading
Michigan in points per set is Alex Hunt at 3.83. Lexi Erwin ranks
second at 3.72 with Courtney Fletcher third at 3.13. Erwin is the team
leader in kills per set at 3.22. Hunt ranks second at 3.20 with Claire
McElheny third at 2.46. Fletcher is the top percentage hitter at .333.
McElheny ranks second at .270 with Jennifer Cross third at .247. At
setter, Lexi Dannemiller has an 11.68 assists per set average. Hunt has
a team-high .43 aces per set average with 45. Fletcher ranks second at
.30 with 33 and Erwin, at .29, is third with 31. Defensively, Sloane
Donhoff leads the team with a 4.57 digs per set average. Dannemiller
ranks second at 2.48 with Ally Sabol third at 2.42. At the net, Cross

Michigan
is averaging 17.59 points, 14.23 kills and 13.24 assists per set while
hitting .230. The Wolverines average 1.52 aces, 15.32 digs and 1.84

the NCAA national statistics released through matches of Nov. 20, Ohio
State is ranked 14th in kills (14.34) and 12th in assists (13.42) per
set. The Buckeyes are ranked 56th in hitting percentage (.238), 129th
in digs (15.34), 64th in blocks (2.38) and 219th in aces (1.10) per set.
Individually,
Emily Danks ranks 16th in aces per set at .46 and Sarah Mignin is 149th
in digs per set at 4.28. Mari Hole is 53rd in points (4.51) and 44th in
kills (3.99) per set.
DANKS THIRD IN OHIO STATE CAREER ACES WITH 169
Emily
Danks is third on the Ohio State career aces list with 169. Second on
the list is Erika Schlitz (1988-91) with 170. Danks ranks second in
career aces per set with a .46 average. She ranks 15th in career attack
percentage at .265, is 20th in career point with 1,217.0 and is 20th in
career points per set at 3.33.
BARHORST NOW SEVENTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER TOTAL BLOCKS
Kelli
Barhorst has moved to seventh in OSU career total blocks with 390 (56
solos, 334 assists). She passed Jenny Jackson with 389 (67-322). Sixth
on the list is Briana McCarthy (2003-04, 06-07) with 398 (55-343)
Barhorst is seventh in career assist blocks with 334. Sixth on the list
is McCarthy with 343. Barhorst has 56 solo blocks in her career for
12th. Ranking 11th on the list with 62 is Danielle Meyer
(2004-07). With .92 blocks per set average, Barhorst ranks 10th
and is 11th in attack percentage at .281.
BOOTH FIFTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER BLOCK PER SET AT 1.01
Mariah Booth ranks fifth in career blocks per set at 1.01. She has 18 solos and 162 assist blocks.
PETERSON TENTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER ASSISTS WITH 1,489
Amanda
Peterson has 1,415 career assists and is tenth on the Ohio State career
assists list. Briana McCarthy (2003-04, 06-07) ranks ninth with 1,963
assists. Peterson is ninth in career assists per set with an 8.09
average. Ranking eighth at 8.62 is Betsy Home (2007-10).
SHERWIN 16TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER ASSISTS WITH 601
Taylor
Sherwin ranks 16th in Ohio State career assists with 601. Erin Hosie
(1985-86) with 605 ranks 15th and Tracy Endecavageh (1989-92) with 618
ranks 14th. Sherwin ranks sixth in assists per set at 9.69. Ranking
fifth is Jen Boleyn (1994-96) at 11.28.
MIGNIN MOVES TO EIGHTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER DIGS WITH 1,180
Sarah
Mignin, with 1,180 digs has moved to eighth on the Ohio State career
digs list. She passed Julie Chellevold (1988-91) with 1,173. Seventh on
the list is Erika Schlitz (1988-91) with 1,197. Mignin ranks seventh in
career digs per set at 2.97 passing. Sixth on the list is Tricia
Stragliotto (1993-95) at 2.99.
#1 DANKS LEADS THE TEAM IN ACES WITH 52
Emily
Danks recorded an ace serve in each match last week to give her a
team-leading 52 on the season. She added four kills (.056) in the
Purdue match and had five kills (.188), two digs and five assist blocks
against Indiana. Danks has played in all 31 matches with 29 starts. She
is averaging 4.18 points, 3.32 kills, .46 aces, 1.56 digs and .74
blocks per set while hitting .268.
#2 BARHORST THE LONE STARTER IN ALL 31 MATCHES
Kelli
Barhorst is the only player this season to start in all 31 matches.
Against Purdue, she had eight kills (.294) and one dig and added six
kills (.400) and three assist blocks against Indiana. A starter in all
31 matches, Barhorst is averaging 2.77 points, 2.14 kills, .52 digs and
.99 blocks per set while hitting a team-high .310.
#3 SCHWARZWALDER HAS PLAYED IN 10 MATCHES
Amy
Schwarzwalder has seen action in 10 matches this season. She did not
play in the Purdue and Indiana matches. Schwarzwalder has collected
four kills, three digs and two assist blocks.
#6 WINNER WORKING IN THE BACK ROW
Alyssa
Winner played against Purdue recording four digs and handling six serve
reception attempts. Against Indiana, she had one dig and handled six
serve receptions. Winner has played in 29 matches with eight starts in
the back row and two at libero. She is averaging 1.72 digs per set and
has a .960 serve reception percentage in handling 309 of 322 attempts.
#7 MIGNIN PLAYING THE LIBERO POSITION
Sarah
Mignin played the libero position in both matches last weekend. She had
11 digs and one assist against Purdue while handling 11 of 12 serve
reception attempts. Against Indiana, Mignin recorded 10 digs, one
assist and one ace serve while handling nine serve reception attempts
without an error. She has played in all 31 matches with three starts at
defensive specialist and 26 at libero. Mignin is averaging a team-high
4.28 digs per set and has a .962 serve reception percentage in handling
733 of 762 attempts.
#8 SHERWIN CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE TO PLAY
Taylor
Sherwin is currently being held out of the action. She did not play in
the Purdue and Indiana matches. Sherwin has played in 21 matches with
11 starts. Sherwin is averaging 9.69 assists and 1.65 digs per set.
#9 DISALVATORE HAS SEVENTH DOUBLE-FIGURE DIG MATCH
Davionna
DiSalvatore recorded 10 digs against Purdue for her seventh
double-figure dig match of the season. She also handled 14 serve
reception attempts without an error against the Boilermakers. Against
Indiana, DiSalvatore had four digs and handled 11 of 12 serve reception
attempts. Playing in all 31 matches, she has 15 starts in the backrow
and three at libero. DiSalvatore is averaging 1.99 digs per set and has
a .954 serve reception percentage in handling 417 of 437 attempts.
#10 BOOTH HAS DOUBLE-FIGURE KILLS AGAINST PURDUE
Mariah
Booth had a co-team-high 12 kills (.375) against Purdue and added one
ace serve, six digs and one assist block. Against Indiana, she had
three kills, one ace serve, four digs and six total blocks with a solo
and five assists. Booth has played and started in 25 matches this
season. She is averaging 2.49 points, 1.89 kills and a team-high 1.04
blocks per set while hitting .257.
#11 LEARY ADDS OFFENSE OFF THE BENCH
Kaitlyn
Leary recorded nine kills in both matches last weekend off the bench.
She had nine kills (.111) and six digs against Purdue and nine kills
(.273), one dig and one solo block against Indiana. Leary has played in
28 matches with six starts. She is averaging 2.66 points, 2.51 kills,
.72 digs and .26 blocks per set while hitting .202.
#12 SEKINGER HAS PLAYED IN 12 MATCHES
Erin
Sekinger has played in 12 matches this season and has started four
times. She did not play in the Purdue and Indiana matches. Sekinger is
averaging 1.67 points, 1.47 kills, .56 digs and .38 blocks per set
while hitting .106.
#14 HOLE IS THE TEAM LEADER IN POINTS AND KILLS
Mari
Hole leads Ohio State in points (4.51) and kills (3.99) per set. She
has played in all 31 matches with 28 starts and is averaging .18 aces,
2.68 digs and .53 blocks per set while hitting .218. Last week against
Purdue, Hole had a co-team-high 12 kills (.108), one assist, one ace
serve, seven digs and three total blocks (2 solo, 1 assist) while
handling 27 of 29 serve reception attempts. She had a match-high 12
kills (.320), one ace serve, two digs and two assist blocks while
handling 12 of 13 serve reception attempts against Indiana.
#15 PETERSON STARTS AGAINST PURDUE AND INDIANA
Amanda
Peterson started both matches last weekend. She had 43 assists against
Purdue adding one kill and four digs. In the Indiana match, Peterson
had 31 assists, one ace serve, seven digs and one assist block. She has
played in 27 matches with 20 starts at setter. Peterson is averaging
8.85 assists, 1.59 digs and .63 blocks per set.
#18 FAUL HAS PLAYED IN 16 MATCHES
Anna
Faul has played in 16 matches this season with six starts. She did not
play in the Purdue and Indiana matches. Faul is averaging .98 points,
.61 kills, .24 digs and .73 blocks per set while hitting .207.
BOOTH NAMED BIG TEN CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The
Big Ten Conference announced co-defensive Player of the Week honors in
women’s volleyball for Ohio State’s Mariah Booth Nov. 7. She shared the
honor with Purdue’s Kierra Jones.
In OSU’s 3-1 (20-25, 25-20,
25-18, 25-21) victory at Wisconsin, Booth posted season highs of eight
block assists and nine total blocks. She added nine kills while hitting
.412. She recorded seven assist blocks, one dig and five kills (.188)
in the 3-1 (18-25, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25) loss at 15th-ranked Minnesota.
HOLE NAMED THE BIG TEN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The
Big Ten Conference honored Mari Hole as the Big Ten Offensive Player of
the Week Sept. 12. She helped Ohio State win the Rocket Classic in
Toledo, Ohio, with 3-1 wins over Penn, Alabama and Toledo and was named
the Classic Most Valuable Player.
Hole had 12 kills (.385),
eight digs and four blocks (one solo and three assists) against Penn.
She produced career highs of 25.5 points and 21 kills (.232) against
Alabama adding 11 digs, five assist blocks and two ace serves. She
reset her career highs for points (31.0) and kills (26, .316) against
Toledo adding two ace serves and equaled her career highs of three solo
blocks and 14 digs. Hole had set-winning kills in five of nine Buckeye
set wins. With the Toledo match tied at one set each, she scored kills
for six of OSU’s final seven points in the third set on her way to a
12-kill performance in the set. Hole averaged 5.92 points, 4.92 kills,
2.75 digs and 1.00 blocks per set for the three matches.
MIGNIN NAMED THE BIG TEN CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The
Big Ten Conference honored Sarah Mignin as the Big Ten Co-Defensive
Player of the Week Sept. 12. She helped Ohio State win the Rocket
Classic in Toledo, Ohio, with 3-1 wins over Penn, Alabama and Toledo
and was named to the Classic All-Tournament Team.
Mignin
averaged 6.0 digs per set and had a .972 serve reception percentage in
the three matches at the Rocket Classic. She recorded 15 digs and tied
her career high of three ace serves against Penn while handling 15
serve receptions without an error. Mignin produced a career-high 30
digs against Alabama adding one ace and one kill. She handled 25 of 27
reception attempts against the Crimson Tide. Mignin closed out the
weekend with 27 digs against Toledo adding two ace serves and handling
29 reception attempts without an error.
MIGNIN NAMED THE BIG TEN CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The
Big Ten Conference honored Sarah Mignin as the Big Ten Co-Defensive
Player of the Week Sept. 19. She averaged 6.27 digs per set for the
three matches and handled 69 serve reception attempts without an error.
Mignin tied her career high of 30 digs against Albany and tied her
career high of three aces against Maryland. She converted 24 of 69 digs
(.348) to kills and had a .406 reception to kills percentage (28 of 69)
in the three matches. Mignins play helped hold OSU’s three opponents to
a .154 attack percentage. For her play at the Sports Imports Classic,
she was named the most outstanding defensive player.
SHERWIN NAMED THE BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
The
Big Ten Conference honored Taylor Sherwin as the Big Ten Freshman of
the Week Sept. 19. She directed the Buckeye offense to the Sports
Imports Classic Championship. Sherwin averaged 14.18 assists and 2.00
digs per set helping OSU to a .304 attack percentage for the three
matches. Defensively, she produced a career-high 14 digs in the Albany
match, adding a solo and one assist block against the Great Danes.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff
Carlston is in his fourth season at Ohio State. He directed the
Buckeyes to the third round of the NCAA Championship finishing with a
24-12 overall record last season. OSU finished sixth in the Big Ten
Conference with a 10-10 mark.
Carlston came to Ohio State after
spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an
outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments,
reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to
five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall
record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1
in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He
began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul
(Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 272-119.
