No. 11 Ohio State Holds On For 13-11 Win Over No. 15 Vanderbilt
Markwordt's 10 points propel Buckeyes to first ALC win of season
COLUMBUS,
Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State women's lacrosse team withstood a
late-game rally by No. 15 Vanderbilt to clinch a 13-11 win Sunday at
the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex in Nashville. Led by 10 points from
Alayna Markwordt, the Buckeyes improved to 9-3 on the season and 1-2 in
the ALC. The Commodores fell to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Markwordt's
10 points off five goals and four assists are a season high, one off
her career best, and paced Ohio State to its second win over a ranked
opponent this season and its third-consecutive victory in the all-time
series vs. Vanderbilt. Cara Facchina, Mary Kate Facchina and Jennifer
Porretto each added two scores, while Kirsten Donahue and Katie
Chaseadded singles to account for all the Buckeye scoring. Despite
registering her first game without a point in 2012, Gabby Capuzzi
commanded a game-high five draw controls and added a pair of caused
turnovers. Tori DeScenzaearned the win in goal with 11 saves to her
credit for the rookie netminder's fourth double-digit outing of the
year. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first
7:32 of action as Markwordt's first two tallies sandwiched one scored
off her first assist to Mary Kate Facchina. The senior attacker would
have a hand in seven of Ohio State's eight first-half goals, helping
the team maintain at least a two-goal lead for the balance. Katie
Mastropieri led Vanderbilt's charge with three goals in the opening
period as the Commodores traded scores with the Buckeyes until the
teams headed into halftime with an 8-6 OSU lead. Ohio State exploded
out of the gate, putting back four goals in a row in the second half to
build its largest lead of the game at 12-6 with 15:45 to play. Donahue
started things off with an unassisted goal less than two minutes into
the period before the Facchina sisters took over and Mary Kate added
her second before older sister Cara rattled off two back-to-back with
all three coming off Markwordt assists. Vanderbilt would
score five of the final six goals in the game, pulling to within two at
3:34 but the comeback ended there. Alex Priddy had three-consecutive
goals in the run before the Buckeyes' Porretto stepped in to break up
the momentum at the 5:12 mark. Two more Vandy scores in less than two
minutes down the stretch accounted for the final 13-11 margin. The
Buckeyes finished with advantages in shots (30-24) and draw controls
(15-11), while forcing nine of Vanderbilt's 16 turnovers.
