Stoneburner Earns Mackey Award
Junior tight end topped his career total with three TDs Saturday vs. Akron
COLUMBUS,
Ohio – Ohio State tight end Jake Stoneburner was named the John Mackey
Tight End of the Week by the Nassau County Sports Commission today. The
junior had four receptions for 50 yards and three receiving touchdowns
in the Buckeyes’ 42-0 win over Akron Saturday. Stoneburner
is the first tight end in modern Ohio State history to catch three
touchdowns in a game. Bob Grimes is listed as an end in Ohio State’s
media guides for 1950-52. He caught four touchdowns vs. Washington
State in a 1952 game. Both Stoneburner and Grimes are among the Top 10
OSU tight ends in career touchdown receptions. Grimes is tied with Jan
White (1968-70) with eight scores and Stoneburner is tied with five
others for eighth place with five touchdowns. John Lumpkin (1996-98)
holds the school record with 10. Other candidates
considered for this week's Mackey Tight End of the Week include Orson
Charles of Georgia and Joseph Fauria of UCLA. The 2011
recipient of "The Mackey" will be announced at the Home Depot ESPNU
College Football Awards Red Carpet Show December 8, 2011 on ESPNU.
