Buckeyes Host Ohio Wednesday

Ohio – The sixth-ranked Ohio State field hockey team continues its home
schedule at 3 p.m. Wednesday, hosting in-state opponent Ohio at Buckeye
Varsity Field. The Buckeyes (0-2, 0-0 Big Ten) will look to rebound
with a victory after dropping two games last weekend against No. 15
Duke and New Hampshire to open the campaign.

CLOSING IN ON 100 Junior
forward Berta Queralt is closing in on a milestone only a handful of
members have achieved at Ohio State. With 97 career points, the OSU
captain will look to become the ninth Buckeye to claim at least 100
career points. A two-time All-American, Queralt has had back-to-back
seasons with at least 46 points.
OHIO STATE VS. OHIO The
Buckeyes lead the all-time series, 22-8-3, against the Bobcats. Last
time out, the Scarlet and Gray began the 2010 campaign in Athens and
defeated Ohio, 2-1, in overtime. The victory marked the 400th win in
Buckeyes’ 40th year of the program being a varsity sport. The squad has
won four of the last five meetings against the Bobcats.

NEWS FROM OHIO Led
by seventh year head coach Neil Macmillan, the Bobcats travel to
Columbus with a 2-0 record. The team defeated St. Francis (Pa.), 7-0,
Aug. 26 and Richmond, 1-0, Aug. 28 in Athens. Jessica Jue notched a
hat-trick against the Red Flash, while Taylor Brown, the team’s leading
scorer in 2010, knocked in two goals against Saint Francis. In its
second game of the season, the Bobcats’ defense allowed just one shot
against the Spiders.
WELCOME BACK Former
Buckeye Kelly Terwilliger (2004-07) begins her first season as
assistant coach of Ohio after serving two years as a graduate assistant
coach. Terwilliger, who was a part of the 2006 Big Ten Championship
Team, started every game for the Scarlet and Gray of her four year
career, earning the team’s Most Valuable Defender Award in 2007 and
2008.
MAKING BUCKEYE DEBUT Four freshmen earned
their first collegiate minutes last weekend against Duke and New
Hampshire. Kaitlyn Wagner made her first career starts at midfield,
while Carline van Schijndel, Carly Mackessy and Alexis Allen each saw
time on the turf.
TUNITIS NOTCHES CAREER HIGH Senior
goalkeeper Ally Tunitis set a career high in saves against Duke Aug. 26
with eight stops. The Buckeye tri-captain collected five of the eight
saves in the second period, helping the team force overtime in the
season opener. The native of Macungie, Pa., Tunitis is currently first
in the OSU record books in goals-against average (1.42).
THREE BUCKEYES NAMED TO BIG TEN PLAYERS TO WATCH LIST
Jenn
Sciulli, Berta Queralt and Paula Pastor-Pitarque were named to the 2011
Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch List the league announced Aug. 25.
Last
weekend, Sciulli collected a defensive save and an assist against Duke,
while posting a second defensive save vs. New Hampshire. The Buckeye
tri-captain led the Big Ten last season in defensive saves with eight
stops. Queralt, a native of Barcelona, Spain, notched both goals
against the Blue Devils, marking the eighth time the OSU forward has
had two goals in a game in her career. Pastor-Pitarque, the 2010 Big
Ten Freshman of the Year, started both games for the Buckeyes against
Duke and New Hampshire. Last season, the native of Barcelona, Spain,
collected 26 points (9g, 8a).
THE CAPTAINS Seniors Ally
Tunitis, Jenn Sciulli and junior Berta Queralt were named a team
captain for the 2011 season – the first such recognition for each of
the three members. The trio has combined for 146 career starts.
UP NEXT Ohio
State will hit the road for the first time in 2011, traveling to
Harrisonburg, Va., to face two non-conference opponents. The Buckeyes
will first play a neutral-site game against Richmond at 2 p.m. Saturday
followed by a 2 p.m. game at James Madison Sunday.
