Buckeyes and Bulldogs Play to 2-2 Tie
The
Ohio State women’s hockey team played to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon
against Minnesota Duluth at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. The Buckeyes
picked up two points by taking the shootout 2-0.
Ohio
State (7-12-5, 2-11-5 WCHA) claimed three points in the series with the
Bulldogs and jumped two spots in the WCHA standings, from eighth to
sixth. It marked the third-consecutive game the Buckeyes went to an
overtime period and a shootout. OSU is now 2-2 in shootouts this season.
Senior
goaltender Lisa Steffes made 29 saves and fellow senior Ally Tarr
scored the game-tying goal late in the third to send the game to
overtime. The Bulldogs held a 31-21 shots-on-goal advantage in the
game.
The teams skated to a scoreless first
period as the Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 9-3. The Buckeyes held UMD
scoreless on two first period power play opportunities, while OSU
failed to convert on it’s one power play chance.
Scoring
opened up early on in period two as Minnesota Duluth’s Ashleigh
Brykaliuk scored the first goal of the series at the two-minute mark
while on the power play. UMD finished 1-6 on the power play attack
while the Buckeyes were held scoreless on five attempts.
Freshman
forward Claudia Kepler tied the game just 47 seconds later with her
team-leading seventh of the season. Assists on the goal came from
sophomores Julia McKinnon and Kendall Curtis.
Less than two minutes after getting the equalizer the Bulldogs went back on top with a goal from Zoe Hickel.
Tarr
would score at 15:17 of the third after being set up by freshman Katie
Matheny. It was the fifth goal of the season for Tarr.
In
the shootout the Buckeyes got two goals on their first two attempts off
the sticks of senior Annie Svedin and Kepler. Steffes turned away both
Bulldog shooters and OSU took the shootout 2-0.
