Buckeyes and Bulldogs Play to 2-2 Tie

The Ohio State women’s hockey team played to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon against Minnesota Duluth at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. The Buckeyes picked up two points by taking the shootout 2-0.

Ohio State (7-12-5, 2-11-5 WCHA) claimed three points in the series with the Bulldogs and jumped two spots in the WCHA standings, from eighth to sixth. It marked the third-consecutive game the Buckeyes went to an overtime period and a shootout. OSU is now 2-2 in shootouts this season.

Senior goaltender Lisa Steffes made 29 saves and fellow senior Ally Tarr scored the game-tying goal late in the third to send the game to overtime. The Bulldogs held a 31-21 shots-on-goal advantage in the game.

The teams skated to a scoreless first period as the Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 9-3. The Buckeyes held UMD scoreless on two first period power play opportunities, while OSU failed to convert on it’s one power play chance.

Scoring opened up early on in period two as Minnesota Duluth’s Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored the first goal of the series at the two-minute mark while on the power play. UMD finished 1-6 on the power play attack while the Buckeyes were held scoreless on five attempts.

Freshman forward Claudia Kepler tied the game just 47 seconds later with her team-leading seventh of the season. Assists on the goal came from sophomores Julia McKinnon and Kendall Curtis.

Less than two minutes after getting the equalizer the Bulldogs went back on top with a goal from Zoe Hickel.

Tarr would score at 15:17 of the third after being set up by freshman Katie Matheny. It was the fifth goal of the season for Tarr.

In the shootout the Buckeyes got two goals on their first two attempts off the sticks of senior Annie Svedin and Kepler. Steffes turned away both Bulldog shooters and OSU took the shootout 2-0.
