Buckeyes Host Ohio Saturday

Dual meet at 1 p.m. at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion

   

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will play host to a dual meet with Ohio University at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Ohio State women enter Saturday with a 4-0 dual meet record. Last Friday, the Buckeyes defeated Virginia Tech (198.0-100), Cleveland State (232.0-66.0) and Denison (234.0-64.0) in a quad meet.  The team of Kelsey Moran, Angela Severn, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:41.38, while sophomore Kelly Ann Baird outlasted Virginia Tech’s Erika Hajnal to claim the 1000 freestyle in 9:55.91. Another sophomore, Alex Norris, recorded a victory in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.49 and the 200 individual medley in 2:05.33.
Severn also finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.88) as well as the 200 breaststroke (2:19.86), while Draves continued to impress with wins in the 200 and 100 butterfly in 2:00.24 and 54.90, respectively. Detro had her first individual win of the night in the 50 freestyle (23.05); she later recorded her second win in the 100 freestyle (50.11), an event that ended in an Ohio State sweep with Michelle Williams (51.82) and Phoebe Cater (52.11) following in second and third. With her second win, Baird took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:51.45. The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay; Ohio State finished first with the team of Detro, Williams, Cater and Lisa Narum in 3:26.59.
In the first diving action of the season, senior Bianca Alvarez came away with two wins, one in the 1-meter competition with a score of 336.60 and another in the 3-meter with 400.35 total points.
In their first meet of the season vs. Kenyon College (176.5-83.5), the Scarlet and Gray captured wins in 13 events. Duplicate winners for the Buckeyes were Jackie Brousseau in the 50 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and with the 200 freestyle relay; Phoebe Cater in the 200 freestyle and the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays; Megan Detro in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay; and Shannon Draves in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle relay.

Scouting Ohio
The Bobcats improved to 3-0 with a win over Buffalo last weekend, besting the Bulls by a final score of 163.5-131.5. The undefeated start is the best beginning to a season for Ohio (3-0, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) since the 2007-08 season, when the Bobcats began 5-0. Ohio won the following events vs. Buffalo: 400 medley relay; 100 free; 100 breast; 500 free; 1-meter diving; 3-meter diving.
Alvarez Big Ten Diver Of Week
Senior Bianca Alvarez has been recognized as the Big Ten Diver of the Week for her winning efforts in a quad meet against Cleveland State, Denison and Virginia Tech last Friday. Alvarez won the 1-meter competition with a score of 336.60 and also took top honors in the 3-meter (400.35) event in her first competition of the Buckeyes' 2011-12 season. Both event scores were NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks. Alvarez earns her first Big Ten weekly award of the season and the sixth of her career.
