Northwestern Improves to 3-0, Sweeps NU Duals
Five pins, four tech falls and a major decision helps NU down SIUE 43-3 and Indianapolis 44-3

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 19 Northwestern won 18 of 20 bouts Sunday defeating SIU-Edwardsville 43-3 and Indianapolis 44-3 at the NU Duals. The ’Cats relied heavily on bonus points using five pins, four tech falls and a major decision to dominate the competition at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

“It was a good effort and I was really happy with the technical things; guys ending matches the right way,” Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano said. “We still have a lot to work on but we’re making strides. We showed some character because it was an interesting week of preparation with finals and now that we’re past that, we can focus on wrestling.”

Northwestern opened up with a 12-0 lead due to SIUE forfeiting at 125 and 133. Pat Greco then recorded NU’s first win of the day with a 16-7 major decision at 141, putting the Wildcats up 16-0, and Kaleb Friedley added to NU’s lead with an 11-8 decision at 149. The Wildcats won their next three bouts by bonus points (pins at 157 and 165 by #3 Jason Welch and Pierce Harger, respectively, and a tech fall for #12 Lee Munster) and Robert Kellogg edged SIUE’s Cole Brandt 3-1 at 184, giving NU the 38-0 lead.

SIUE recorded their lone win of the match at 197 lbs. with a 5-3 decision for Josh Wood but Mike McMullan closed out the dual on a high note for NU at heavyweight with a 15-0 tech fall in 3:08 to put the final score at 43-3.

Against Indianapolis, NU got out to another 12-0 lead, this time using pins by #8 Levi Mele at 125 and Oster at 133. Colin Shober wrestled for NU at 141 and recorded a 3-1 decision over Justin Kieffer, extending Northwestern’s lead to 15-0. Friedley and Welch added two more pins and Harger won his second bout of the day with a 6-0 shutout at 165 lbs. Indianapolis forfeited at 174 lbs. and recorded its lone win of the match at 184 with Aaron Stevenson’s 7-3 decision.

Northwestern won its final two bouts as John Schoen scored a 19-4 tech fall in 5:32 and McMullan closed out the NU Duals with a 7-2 decision, giving Northwestern the 44-3 victory.

Northwestern is back in action at Welsh-Ryan Arena Friday, Dec. 16, hosting North Central College at 7 p.m. That will be NU’s final dual before hosting the 49th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30.
