Purdue Edges Northwestern 2-1 in 'Cats Big Ten Home Opener
Jill Dunn registers her second goal of the season
EVANSTON,
Ill. – Senior Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) scored her
second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half but
Purdue notched a goal in the 59th minute to secure the 2-1 victory at
Lakeside Field. After playing their first three Big Ten games on the
road, tonight’s game was the first conference match for Northwestern at
Lakeside Field this season.
"It’s really disappointing to
lose at home,” Northwestern head coach Stephanie Foster said. “We gave
up a soft goal in the first half and did well to get on the board but
our play fizzled after Purdue scored a good goal on a corner. We will
keep searching for a win on Sunday against Indiana."
Purdue
finished with the 13-9 advantage in shots and 6-3 lead over
Northwestern in shots on goal. The Boilermakers had the 7-2 advantage
on shots in the first half but Northwestern outshot Purdue 7-6 in the
second frame. Sophomore Kate Allen (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) led
the Wildcats with three shots. Dunn had two shots on goal and one that
resulted in a score for Northwestern in the 46th minute. Trailing 1-0,
Dunn headed a shot in from the six-yard box and Purdue goalkeeper Clara
Kridler was able to get her arm on it to save the goal, but the rebound
trickled on the goal line and Dunn knocked it in for the score.
Purdue,
who had a first-half goal by Kellie Phillips, then went up 2-1 on a
goal by Alexandria Hairston. Jordan Frick and Mollie Kuramoto were
credited with assists on the Boilermakers’ second goal.
Freshman
Anna Cassell (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) saved four shots in goal
for the Wildcats while Kridler had two saves. Purdue had the 4-1
advantage on corner kicks.
