No. 14 Northwestern Falls to No. 1 Penn State

The three-time defending NCAA champions Penn State Nittany Lions proved too much to handle for Northwestern.

No. 1 Penn State won eight of the ten individual bouts Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center to upend No. 12 NU 39-8 Sunday.

The Lions (9-0, 3-0), who featured eight of their ten starters ranked in the Top 20 including three in the top three by Intermat, won seven matches with bonus points.

Northwestern (6-4, 1-4) got individual wins by No. 4 Jason Tsirtsis at 149 lbs. and heavyweight No. 4 Mike McMullan.

No. 2 Nick Megalundis began the match winning by tech fall 23-6 over the `Cats Garrison White to put the Lions ahead 5-0. Penn State would win the first three individual bouts to take a 12-0 lead it would not give up.

Tsirtis got NU on the scoreboard with a 5-3 win in overtime against Zach Beitz to make it 12-3. But Penn State responded to win the next five matches to take a 39-2 lead after NU was penalized for a second bench warning and lost a point.

Ranked No. 1 in the country at 165 lbs., Penn State's David Taylor won by 17-2 tech fall over No. 9 Pierce Harger and NU's No. 9 Lee Munster lost after an injury default to No. 3 Mathew Brown.

No. 4 heavyweight Mike McMullan closed out the match defeating No. 12 Jimmy Lawson, earning bonus points after 2:44 by injury default and improved to 6-1 on the season.
