White Posts Top Collegiate Mark in Final Day of Holiday Inn Invitational Action

Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska track and field team continued action at the Holiday Inn Invitational on Saturday afternoon. After capturing eight event titles on Friday night, the Huskers added 13 more event crowns and two collegiate titles on Saturday.

 

Junior James White made a quick name for himself at the Devaney Center, stealing the show and winning the men’s high jump with a leap of 7-5 1/4 (2.27), a personal best for him. His jump is the leading jump in the nation entering today’s meet and is fifth all-time in the Nebraska record books. He is the reigning junior college high jump champion after completing the last two years at Central Iowa Community College. Carlos Hernandez finished second in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 6-11 (2.11).

 

Marusa Cernjul won the women’s high jump with a mark of 5-8 (1.73). Jillanna Scanlan came in second with a mark of 5-8 (1.73) and Anne Martin finished third with a jump of 5-6 (1.68).

 

Anna Weigandt won her first title of the 2013 season with a mark of 40-1 ¼ (12.22) in the women’s triple jump. Ellie Ewere took third with a jump of 37-11 ½ (11.57).

In the men’s pole vault, redshirt freshman Craig Driver posted the top collegiate mark with a personal-best vault of 15-11 1/4 (4.86). Former Husker Nate Polacek recorded the top vault of 16-5 1/4 (5.01). On the women’s side, Maggie Maher took home the pole vault title with a mark of 12-11 ½ (4.03). Freshman Tess Merrill and redshirt freshman Paula Andrie finished tied for second with vaults of 11-5 ¾ (3.50).

 

Carlie Pinkelman won the women’s shot put on the day with a throw of 49-9 1/4 (14.94). Tristen Sharp came in third with a personal-best throw of 46-7 1/4 (14.20). Taylor Shapland posted the top collegiate mark in the men’s shot put with a throw of 55-8 ¼ (16.97). Former Husker Luke Pinkelman won the event with a throw of 62-5 ¾ (19.04).

 

Breunna McCarty finished second in the women’s 60 meters, posting a time of 7.72, tying her personal best. Nikita Pankins came in second in the 60 meters on the men’s side, recording a time of 6.953, while John Welk followed in third-place with a time of 6.958.

 

Mara Weekes won the women’s 200 meters with a time of 24.59, the 16th-best time in the nation entering today. She also took home the 400 meters title with a time of 56.08, while Mila Andric came in third with a time of 56.64. Janis Leitis captured the men’s 200 meters crown with a time of 21.43, tying for the ninth-best mark in the nation entering today’s meet. Cody Rush won the 400 meters on the men’s side with a time of 48.79.

 

Senior Tommy Brinn recorded the third-best time in Husker history in the 600 meters, finishing first in the event with a time of 1:18.18. His personal-best in the event is 1:17.63. Husker newcomer Shawnice Williams took second in the women’s 600 meters with a time of 1:34.57.

 

Miles Ukaoma won the men’s 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.13, while Jordan Stiens finished second in the women’s 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.83.

 

In the men’s distance relay, the Nebraska A squad of Trevor Vidlak, Tibor Koroknai, Tommy Brinn and Connor Gibson took the title with a time of 10:12.49. The Nebraska B team of Sidney Madlock, Nolan Border, Brett Grieb and Alney Tobias finished second with a time of 10:12.75.

 

The Nebraska A squad took the 4x400 meter title as Ricco Hall, Dexter McKenzie, Cody Rush and Jodi-Rae Blackwood produced a time of 3:14.96. The Nebraska B squad of Miles Ukaoma, Christian Sanderfer, Connor Gibson and London Hawk finished second with a time of 3:15.74.
