MSU defeats Southeastern Louisiana in the final game
After
struggling to find offense all weekend, the bats came to life on Sunday
for the Michigan State baseball team, as the Spartans put a run on the
board in five consecutive innings to beat Southeastern Louisiana, 9-2,
and improve to 3-3 on the year. The Spartans had 10 hits in the game,
led by Zack McGuire and Chad Roskelly, who went a combined 6-for-8 with
four RBIs and three runs.
"I thought our guys answered the bell
today," said head coach Jake Boss. "We struggled offensively the past
two days, but made some changes to the lineup, challenged some guys,
and gave some other guys opportunities and they did a nice job and took
advantage. Really happy for guys like Chad Roskelly and Zack McGuire,
who both got their first hits today and had big days at the plate."
The
pitching continued to be stellar for the Spartans, beginning with
starter Anthony Misiewicz. The junior left hander earned the win,
giving up just one run in five innings and striking out seven. Jeff
Kinley came on to pitch three innings in relief, and despite allowing
two baserunners each inning, he kept the Lions off the board. Redshirt
freshman Dakota Mekkes finished out the game, allowing one run on one
hit.
"It was a tough day to pitch with it being cold and wet,"
said Boss. "He (Misiewicz) is a competitor. His pitch count got up and
he threw a lot of pitches early in the game, but he gutted out five
innings for us. Good day for us and he got himself out of some jams and
we made some nice plays defensively to get out of some jams. All around
it was a pretty good day for us." MSU fell behind early
after Southeastern Louisiana put its first two runners on base in the
second, followed by a sac bunt and sac fly to plate the first run of
the afternoon and give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long
for MSU to tie it back up, as McGuire homered in the bottom half of the
inning for his first collegiate hit and RBI. The Spartans continued to
string together hits in the third, starting with a leadoff single from
Roskelly. With runners on first and second, Mark Weist roped a single
to right to bring home Roskelly and give the Spartans their first lead
of the weekend.
McGuire went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBIs
and two runs. Roskelly also tallied both his first hit and RBI of his
career in the contest, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
"We
were in a position after the last few days to give some other guys
opportunities and shake some things up," said Boss. "Give those guys
credit because they were ready to go when their name was called. Big
days by both of them and it really kick started us with McGuire's home
run. Those guys both put together big days with big RBIs in big
situations."
Leading 4-1 in the sixth, Blaise Salter blew the
game wide open with a pinch hit two-run blast to left field for his
first home run of the season. MSU tacked on three more runs in the
eighth on two runs and two walks.
