Spartans Wrap Up Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational
Michigan
State wrapped up competition at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Regatta on
Sunday morning, lining up with Virginia and Louisville. Facing stiffer
competition than it saw on Saturday, MSU failed to win a race, but got
a pair of second-place finishes in the novice eight and second varsity
four. Virginia swept all six boat classes on the day.
"This was
a weekend of competition that we added late, but it was beneficial for
us in a lot of ways," said head coach Matt Weise. "I think we really
learned a lot this weekend. I wanted to see more out of the crews today
than we saw yesterday, and they delivered - even though it won't show
in that we didn't win. We're very much a work in progress. "I really
believe that this team has a lot of speed that it will be able to
develop over time," continued Weise. "We've identified the holes, and
we just keep on working towards getting better. With races this early,
we're also learning how to race, and what it's going to take to be
successful."
In the varsity eight race, the Spartans were in
third place, a half-length behind Louisville; Virginia sprinted out to
a big lead and posted a 10-second margin over the Cardinals at the
finish. In the second varsity eight, each boat crossed the line 10
seconds apart, with Virginia leading the way in a time of 7:25.300. The
Cavaliers had an even larger margin in the varsity four, posting a
7:25.800 (just four seconds off the time of its 2V8), with Louisville
more than 16 seconds behind.
In the second four, MSU finished
second to UVA , crossing the line in a time of 7:43.695, five seconds
ahead of Louisville but nearly 18 behind the race winner Virginia. MSUs
novice eight was just over two lengths behind Virginia, but was more
than 12 seconds ahead of Louisville at the finish. MSU's second novice
lined up with the third varsity boats from Virginia, Notre Dame and
Duke, finishing third behind the Cavaliers and Irish, clocked in a time
of 7:24.97.
