Seniors Brown, Zaziski Lead Michigan Past Maryland
The
No. 7 University of Michigan women's gymnastics team continued its home
success in 2018 with a 196.875-195.050 victory over No. 36 Maryland on
Sunday (Feb. 4) in Crisler Center.
It was princess and super
hero day at Crisler Center with kids dressed in all sorts of costumes
throughout the arena, waving glitter wands or wearing decorated super
hero masks as they cheered on the Wolverines.
The Michigan team
looked more like super heroes on what was indeed Super Bowl Sunday, as
they were led by seniors Brianna Brown and Paige Zaziski. Both seniors
put up all-around scores above a 39.300 to lead the team to its fourth
win of the season.
"It was always great to be home," said
Zaziski. "We love our fans and they helped us have a good time today.
We just want to keep improving."
Brown won the all-around for
the second time in her career with a 39.425. She was strong on all four
events with a score of 9.800 or higher on each one. Her top event was
floor exercise, where she scored a 9.900 to match a career high. She
also tied for second on uneven bars with a 9.875.
Zaziski earned
three event titles. She was on fire for most of the meet, recording a
9.900 score on each of the first three events to earn first place. Her
9.900 on vault gave her just her second vault victory at Michigan and
tied with junior Olivia Karas for the win. The 9.900 on bars was
Zaziski's eighth bars title in two years at U-M and her 9.900 on beam
set a career high as she won the event for the first time. She ended
with an all-around score of 39.375.
Michigan made it a sweep of
the event titles as junior Emma McLean won floor for the fourth
straight week. She entered the meet ranked fifth in the nation on floor
and hit her 9.925 average to capture the crown.
The Wolverines
scored a 49.275 on vault to rebound from two sub-49.000 scores the last
two weeks. Beam was also a highlight as Michigan set a season high with
a 49.325.
