First Varsity Eight Earns Big Ten Boat of the Week

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing (No. 2 CRCA/USRowing Coaches) first varsity eight boat was named the Big Ten Boat of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday (April 4). Michigan's 1V8 boat defeated two ranked opponents last weekend (No. 9 Yale and No. 12 Michigan State) in a weekend sweep on Saturday (March 31) in Columbus, Ohio. This marks the first Big Ten Boat of the Week award for Michigan since April 26, 2011, when its second varsity eight boat won the honor.

Michigan's first varsity eight squad opened the event with a 12-second win over Michigan State (6:18.10 to 6:30.69) and followed that up with a 12-second victory over Yale in the afternoon (6:16.7 to 6:28.92). The Wolverine 1V8 crew is unbeaten in four races this season.

The lineup for the Michigan first varsity eight boat consisted of: Colleen Macke (Coxswain), Melisa Ongun, Julia Darnton, Jessica Eiffert, Bryna Oleshansky, Felice Mueller, Emily Eiffert, Lindsey Healy and Shannon Stief.

U-M returns to action on Saturday (April 7), when the team travels to Iowa City, Iowa, for races vs. Iowa and Louisville. Racing starts at 9 a.m. CDT. The Wolverines hold their only home event of the season the following Saturday (April 14) when Oregon State, Oklahoma and Tennessee travel to Belleville Lake.
