Iowa Downs AIB for Win No. 10
Nine
University of Iowa pitchers limited AIB to a pair of hits in a 7-1
victory Wednesday in the 2015 home opener at Duane Banks Field. The win
was the Hawkeyes’ 10th of the season, improving the record to 10-2.
“It
was a good day; we got everything out of it that we needed to,” said UI
head coach Rick Heller. “Having a chance to play at home this
early in March was big. I was pleased with the pitching, and we hit
enough… it was a good day overall.”
Seven of the nine
pitchers didn’t surrender a hit, and three pitchers retired the Eagles
in order. Freshman Nick Allgeyer (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 fourth
inning en route to his first career victory on a “Johnny All-Staff
Day.” Freshman Nick Gallagher faced the minimum an inning
earlier, after picking off a baserunner he plunked.
“A
couple of guys it was their first outing in college,” said Heller. “I
was happy all of them did a great job. It was impressive.”
Offensively, the Hawkeyes finished with 10 hits with four going for extra bases. Six of the seven runs were earned.
Iowa
scored a combined six runs in the second, third, and fourth
innings. Freshman Austin Guzzo got things going in the second
with a one-out triple down the right field line before scoring on an
RBI single from senior Sean Moore.
The Hawkeyes pushed the
lead to 3-0 in third. Junior Tyler Peyton led off the inning with
a single up the middle and scored on a one-out double from junior Joel
Booker. Booker moved to third on the play via a throwing error
from center fielder Zach Close and scored on an RBI groundout from
senior Dan Potempa.
Iowa broke the game open, using a pair
of hits and an AIB error to push the lead to 6-0 in the fourth.
The Hawkeyes loaded the bases with one out on a Moore single and
back-to-back walks before Goodman delivered the big hit, lacing a
stand-up RBI triple to right field.
AIB pushed across its
only run in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff
walk against Iowa reliever Daniel Aaron Moriel. Jay Stout scored
on a one-out RBI groundout off the bat of Close, cutting the deficit to
6-1.
The Hawkeyes used its fourth extra base hit of the
game to plate their seventh run in the seventh. Goodman led off
the inning with his third hit of the game, stole second, and scored on
an RBI double from junior Jimmy Frankos to right field. The hit
was Frankos’ first of the 2015 season.
Goodman finished
the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored for his fourth
multi-hit game of the season. Moore finished 2-for-3 with a run
and RBI for his first career multi-hit game. Goodman and Toole
both extended their reached base streaks to 11 games.
Iowa (10-2) returns to action Saturday, opening a four-game series at Houston Baptist.
