Alex
Dickerson Corrals All-American Honors Once Again
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The American Baseball Coaches
Association (ABCA) recognized Indiana's Alex Dickerson as an
All-American this week, placing him on the second team. It marks
Dickerson's second All-America accolade, earning first team honors
following the 2010 season.
Indiana head coach Tracy Smith has now guided at least one Hoosier to
All-America status in four consecutive years. Josh Phegley did so in
2008 and 2009, Eric Arnett in 2009 and Dickerson the past two seasons.
Earlier this month, the Poway, Calif., native was drafted by the
Pittsburgh Pirates with the first pick of the third round.
Dickerson led IU in batting average (.367), homeruns (9), RBI (49),
slugging percentage (.540) and on-base percentage (.440). The 2010 Big
Ten Triple Crown winner made a run at repeating the feat, finishing in
the top-five for average, homeruns and RBI in '11.
In order to make the All-America team, Dickerson had to first crack the
ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Mideast Region First Team. He, along with four other
regional first teamers were then selected as All-Americans as well.
"Speaking on behalf of the selection committee, I feel that this year's
Mideast Region players are very deserving of this recognition," Carbone
said. "They head a long list of impressive players and represent
a lot of very good teams from around the region."
The All-American teams are selected by a committee made up of each
region's chairman. Monmouth head coach Dean Ehehalt represented the
East Region while also chairing the committee and was joined by Oregon
head coach George Horton (West), Middle Tennessee State head coach
Steve Peterson (South Central), Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin
(South), UMass head coach Mike Stone (Northeast), Indiana State head
coach Rick Heller (Midwest), Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor
(Atlantic) and Carbone (Mideast) in Omaha, Neb., last week before the
start of the 2011 NCAA Men's College World Series.
