Walsh Downs Another Ranked Foe as IU Falls to #2 Iowa, 26-12

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Matt Powless and Ryan LeBlanc each tallied their team-leading 21st victories of the season Friday night as the Hoosiers (6-2, 0-2) were defeated by #2 Iowa (7-0, 2-0), 26-12, in the Big Ten home opener. Indiana’s Taylor Walsh was also triumphant Friday night, topping his second nationally-ranked foe of the season for his 19th win overall.

Walsh cracked the national rankings earlier this season after defeating #5 Eric Grajales (Michigan), and he may just re-enter that list next week following his 4-3 win over 11th-ranked Mike Kelly of Iowa. His opening-minute takedown would prove to be the difference in the end Friday night. A bout jam-packed with scrambling and near reversals ultimately resulted with Walsh having his arm raised as a 4-3 winner. The New Jersey product improves to 19-7 on his freshman campaign.

LeBlanc blasted Walter Gillmor for two takedowns in the opening period to build an early lead. He continued to extend that advantage throughout as he tallied five takedowns en route to a 15-5 major decision; his sixth major of the season. Most impressive was the variety of ways LeBlanc took down his adversary, using a multitude moves to score on Gillmor.

Powless, ranked fourth nationally, blew right past a major decision and secured five team points with a 22-7 tech fall over Tomas Lira. Powless owned an 8-2 edge after the first frame and never looked back after notching near fall points; cutting Lira over and over for the duration. It marked the 110th win of Powless’ impressive career, putting him just one away from cracking Indiana’s all-time top-10.

The newest Hoosier, Adam Chalfant, had a solid debut despite a losing effort. The Harper College transfer fell victim to a four-point move in the first minute of his bout before battling back to outscore 2011 Big Ten Heavyweight Champion Blake Rasing, 4-2, the rest of the way.
