Southern Scuffle
CHATTANOOGA,
Tenn.- Seniors Matt Ortega and Matt Powless remain in the competition
following Day One of the Southern Scuffle, each battling to finish as
high as third place. The Hoosiers are slotted 13th in the team
standings after Sunday’s session. Wrestling action is set to
resume Monday at 9 a.m. Powless, ranked fourth
nationally and the No. 3 seed at the Scuffle, improved to 17-2 on the
season with two wins in the championship bracket before suffering a
defeat in the quarterfinals. The Newburgh, Ind., native earned both of
his victories via pin fall, sticking Travis Porter (Gardner Webb) in
the first period and Cornell’s Lucasz Stala in the final minute. On
Monday, Powless needs to string together four consecutive wins to place
third. His run will start when he faces Zach Nye of Virginia in his
first bout of the day. Ortega’s third-place hopes rely
on four straight wins as well, but he took a different path to get
there. After an opening round forfeit, Ortega was sent to the
wrestlebacks after dropping a 7-2 decision to 15th-ranked Mike Nevinger
(Cornell). From there, Ortega ripped off back-to-back-to-back wins,
including a major decision. The four-time New Mexico state champion is
now 18-7 overall on the season. Luke Sheridan and Taylor
Walsh were also multiple-time winners for Indiana, each having their
hand raised twice and recording a pin before bowing out of the
competition. Walsh’s fall was his ninth on the year, tops on the
team.
