No. 15 Indiana Makes a Statement, Topples No. 13 Michigan 10-5
The
No. 15 Indiana women’s water polo team made a big statement Saturday
night, defeating rival Michigan, the No. 13 ranked team in the country,
by a decisive 10-5 margin in the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Senior
Shae Fournier recorded two goals for the Hoosiers, propelling her into
third place on Indiana’s all-time record list with 225 career goals.
She surpassed Krista Peterson who is now in fourth with 224 goals. She
only needs 20 more points to pass former teammate Jakie Kohli for
second with 244 goals.
Defense took over
immediately for both teams, with the squads only taking a combined four
shots on goal during the first three minutes. A penalty shot awarded to
Fournier broke the stand-off and put Indiana up 1-0.
Indiana
was extremely efficient on offense, creating several good looks. Junior
Rebecca Gerrity was able to net one on the 6-on-5 opportunity to give
the Hoosiers a 2-0 advantage.
Credit the defense
for holding off the counter attack. Sophomore goalie Jessica Gaudreault
was aggressive from the get-go and finished with 11 saves and two
steals.
Half way through the second quarter
Michigan found themselves facing Gaudreault one-on-one… or so they
thought. Senior transfer Allison Campbell sped down the pool, came up
behind the attacker and stole the ball away right as she was at the
net. She quickly passed the ball down the length of the pool where it
was recovered by center Candyce Schroeder who tossed it in for the
score.
The Wolverines finally got themselves on
the scoreboard before the half, but counter attacks from Campbell,
Summer Creighton, and Shelby Taylor put IU up 6-2 heading into the
break.
The third and fourth quarters were much of
the same with six different players scoring points. Sophomore Candyce
Schroeder finished the match with three goals, making it the third hat
trick she’s recorded. Junior Shelby Taylor also matched a personal
career-high by stealing the ball away from the Wolverines four times.
The
Hoosiers are now 2-0 (1-0) to start the season. They will have a
weekend off before traveling to Providence, RI to compete in the Brown
Invitational on Feb. 1-2. Indiana will face Michigan again, this time
at home, Feb. 22 when the Wolverines compete in the annual Fluid Four.
