Facing
a 9-0 deficit as he took the mat for the 149-pound showdown, Walsh
earned six team points with a third-period pin of Alex Gordon. Walsh
carried a 7-0 advantage heading into the final frame before turning
Gordon over to his back and recording the fall. It is Walsh’s
team-leading eighth pin of the season.
Ohio State would then
take the next four bouts, but not before true freshman Lucas Sheridan
gave #15 C.J. Magrum a scare at 184 pounds. Sheridan, making his
attached Hoosier debut, battled Magrum in a tight 5-3 decision.
Indiana
got back on the board in the following match, thanks to fifth-ranked
Matt Powless and his 7-6 decision over Andrew Campolattano. The
two 197-pounders exchanged takedowns and subsequent escapes in the
opening period for a 3-3 deadlock entering period number two.
Powless
began the second stanza on bottom and escaped in less than 10 seconds
to take a 4-3 lead. Campolattano struck next, however, recording a
takedown to go ahead. The pendulum continued to swing as Powless posted
a reversal with five seconds left in the period to surge past
Campolattano, 6-5.
An impressive ride of 1:43 in the third
period by Powless would prove to be the difference as Campolattano
escaped to even the score at 6-6, but a 1:17 riding time advantage for
Powless handed him the bout-clinching bonus point, 7-6.
The
Hoosiers return to tournament format for their next competition.
Indiana will start the new year in Chattanooga, Tenn., wrestling in the
Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2.
