Fouls and Turnovers Doom the Hoosiers in their Loss to No. 15 UC Davis

No. 13 Indiana squared off under the lights against No. 15 UC Davis for the final match of the Triton Invitational. The Hoosiers and the Aggies exchanged multiple lead changes, but multiple fouls against IU gave the Aggies many scoring opportunities, and they defeated Indiana 8-7 at the Canyonview Aquatic Center at UC San Diego.

Davis' center found the ball and tossed the ball in to claim the match's opening goal. Senior Shae Fournier was able to even up the score on the power play, and then scored once again from way out to give the Hoosiers the lead.

Fournier had three goals in the match, all of which came in the first quarter. Fournier is only four goals away from setting the all-time scoring record at Indiana. She currently has 243 career points, sitting just behind Kristin Stanford who holds the record with 246.

Davis evened the scored on a 5-meter attempt before capturing the lead at 3-2.

The first goal in the second period belonged to Rebecca Gerrity, and when added to another goal from Fournier, helped the Hoosiers jumped back to a 4-3 lead. Despite the physical play (7-plus exclusions for both team in the first half alone), goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault kept the Aggies scoreless in the second quarter, and IU went into the half with a 4-3 lead. Gaudreault finished with 10 saves, blocking two 5-meter attempts and several one-on-one opportunities.

The third quarter started much the same as the first. Davis once again found their center in the middle and tied the score at four. Three Indiana goals, this time from junior Rebecca Gerrity, gave the Hoosiers a two-point lead heading into the third.

Three quick goals by UC Davis gave them an 8-7 lead with one minute and 45 seconds left to play. The Aggies were awarded another 5-meter attempt, but it was blocked by Gaudreault. The Hoosiers had one last shot attempt, but the ball connected with the goalie's hand, and the Hoosiers finished with a 8-7 defeat.
After splitting the weekend 2-2, Indiana is now 8-2 on the season. The Hoosiers have a week off before hosting their own invitational Feb. 21-22.
