No. 11 Indiana Dominates Wagner, 10-3
SAN
DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers women’s water polo team
(20-7, 1-1 CWPA West) cruised past Wagner, 10-3, to wrap up play at the
Aztec Invitational on Sunday. The victory marks the fifth consecutive
20-plus win season for head coach Barry King and the Hoosiers and the
13th in 15 seasons. Sophomore Meghan Lappan and freshman
Shelby Taylor posted hat tricks to lead the way for the Hoosiers.
Freshman Nina Escobedo, sophomore Shae Fournier, freshman Colleen
McNaught, and sophomore Amanda Redfern scored one goal apiece. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff registered 14 saves in the cage, to go along with three steals and an assist. Lappan
scored first for the Hoosiers two minutes into the action after an
assist from Taylor. The goal came on a power play after Redfern earned
one of her team-high four exclusions. Lappan followed up with another
power play goal at the 4:25 mark of the opening quarter to put IU up
2-0. The Hoosiers extended the lead to three late in the
period when Wyckoff collected a save and found an open Taylor for the
score on the other end. Redfern converted from the post near the midway point of the second quarter to put the Hoosiers in front by four goals. The
suffocating Indiana defense gave up its first goal of the contest with
17 seconds left in the half when Wagner connected from long-range. Taylor
opened the third quarter with two consecutive goals on assists from
Lappan and Fournier to put the Hoosiers in control with a five-goal
advantage. A Wagner five-meter goal briefly cut the lead
to four, but the Cream and Crimson answered back with scores from
Fournier and McNaught to take an 8-2 lead into the fourth. Lappan fired in a power play goal in the final stanza after a dish from Creighton to put IU ahead 9-2. A late Wagner goal was countered with a long-range strike from Escobedo to lift the Hoosiers to the seven-goal victory.
