WASHINGTON vs. ILLINOIS

Let's discuss the Game and the Washington team: The Washington football team (2-0) continues its four-game homestand this Saturday when Illinois arrives in Seattle for a 1:00 p.m. game at Husky Stadium. The Huskies enter the game off of two close, non-league victories at Hawai’i (17-16) and Eastern Washington (59-52) while the Illini are also 2-0, having beaten Youngstown State and Western Kentucky, both in Champaign.
The Dawgs continue the September in Seattle with Georgia State (Sept. 20) and Stanford (Sept. 27) before a bye week (Oct. 4) and finally another road game at Cal on Oct. 11.
QUICK SLANTS: Senior NT Danny Shelton became just the fifth Husky ever with four or more sacks in a game with 4.0 vs. EWU ... he was the first Husky to record four or more sacks in a game since 1989 (Martin Harrison) ... Shelton leads the nation with 6 sacks (no one else has more than 3.5) ... he also leads the NCAA with 7.5 tackles for loss and is tied for sixth in total tackles with 24 ... in 2 games, the UW has scored TDs from 91, 57 and 55 yards ... Washington had five true freshmen play in the Hawai’i game: DB Budda Baker, DB Darren Gardenhire, DB Naijiel Hale, WR Brayden Lenius and PK Tristan Vizcaino ... three more saw action vs. EWU, for a total of eight this season: DL Will Dissly, DB Sidney Jones and WR Dante Pettis ... thanks to the four straight home games and a bye week, the Dawgs will go 42 days between road games before taking on Cal in Berkeley on Oct. 11 ... there were no turnovers by either team Washington’s game at Hawai’i ... vs. Hawai’i, John Ross caught a 91-yard TD pass from Jeff Lindquist, the second-longest pass play in Husky history (Jake Locker to Marcel Reece, 98 yards, 2007, is the record) ... the 91-yard play happened on the first play of the drive, which tied the UW record for the longest-ever one-play scoring drive ... prior to the season-opening win at UH, the last time a new Husky coach won his debut game was in 1993, when Jim Lambright’s Dawgs opened the season with a win over Stanford ... no Husky coach had ever begun his UW tenure with a road victory ... Washington hadn’t won a true non-conference road game since the 2007 opener at Syracuse (last year’s win over Illinois came at Soldier Field, technically a neutral site).

Washington boasts the rare distinction of returning seven players with starting experience on the offensive line. What’s more: all seven of those players started at some point TWO sea-sons ago (in 2012) and were returning starters last season. Entering the 2014 season, UW offensive linemen had started a total of 123 games.
Here’s the breakdown (alphabetically): James Atoe (7), Shane Brostek (3), Dexter Charles (21), Mike Criste (20), Micah Hatchie (26), Ben Riva (20) and Colin Tanigawa (26).
