Soldier Field showdown against Northern Illinois

Tailgate at the "Badgerville at Soldier Field" event

MADISON, Wis. – The Badgers’ much-anticipated matchup at legendary Soldier Field against Northern Illinois has been scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Sept. 17, the Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday. The game will stream live online on ESPN3.com.

The game marks Wisconsin’s first regular season tilt at a neutral site since defeating Bowling Green, 35-14, at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Sept. 2, 2006 in Bret Bielema’s head coaching debut.

Since 1997, UW has played in an NFL stadium 12 times, posting a 5-7 record in those contests.

Wisconsin is 11-1 all-time against the Huskies and has won four straight in the series. Most recently, the Badgers opened the 2009 season with a 28-20 win in Madison. The 2011 matchup marks the first game between the two teams that will be played in a location other than Camp Randall.

The battle between UW and NIU also marks the Badgers’ first game against former defensive coordinator Dave Doeren, who took over as head coach of the Huskies on Dec. 13, 2010.

Over half of the Badgers’ schedule has been now been announced. The kickoff times and television networks for the team’s five remaining contests will not be determined until the season begins.

The 2011 season opens on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Camp Randall as the Badgers host UNLV at 7 p.m.  Nine days later, UW welcomes Pac-10 foe Oregon State for an 11 a.m. kickoff on Sept. 10.

On Oct. 1, Nebraska plays its first game in the Big Ten under the lights of Camp Randall at 7 p.m. After a bye week, the Badgers round out a three-game homestand with a Homecoming matchup against Indiana at 11 a.m. on Oct. 15.

The Badgers’ first true road contest comes on Oct. 22 when UW travels to East Lansing, Mich., for a nighttime battle against Michigan State. The following week is another primetime road affair as Wisconsin visits Ohio State on Oct. 29 for a 7 p.m. contest.
